Why Thread Protection Is Not Optional

A single damaged thread can prevent a connection from making up to the required torque, and on a premium connection a nick in the metal-to-metal seal can cause a leak that is not detectable until the well is on production. Most thread damage happens not in the well but in transit: during crane handling, in the pipe rack, on a flatbed truck, or during ocean shipment in a container. Thread protectors are therefore a functional requirement, not packaging. API RP 5A5 gives guidance on protection, and API 5CT requires protectors to be fitted to both ends for shipment. For premium connections, the protector is designed to protect the sealing surface specifically and must be the type approved for that connection.

Plastic versus Steel Protectors

Plastic protectors, usually polyethylene or polypropylene, are the standard for API round and buttress threaded casing, tubing and line pipe. They are lightweight, inexpensive, will not rust, and absorb impact without transferring it to the thread. Steel protectors are used where greater mechanical protection is needed, for example on drill pipe, on large diameter casing, or on premium connections with a delicate sealing surface. A steel protector must be inspected before fitment to ensure there are no burrs or debris inside that could damage the thread it is meant to protect. Some premium connection protectors combine a steel outer shell with a plastic or elastomer inner liner to give both mechanical strength and a soft contact surface.

Why do premium connections need special thread protectors?

Because a premium connection seals by direct metal-to-metal contact, its conical or spherical sealing surface must remain free of any nick, burr, corrosion or contamination. A standard plastic protector designed for an API round thread does not have the correct internal geometry for a premium seal and may allow the sealing surface to contact the protector body. The correct protector is one approved by the connection manufacturer, which usually has a specific internal profile and a soft liner. Using the wrong protector on a premium connection can void the connection warranty.

Should thread protectors be removed for inspection on arrival?

Yes. Thread protectors should be removed and the threads inspected as soon as the shipment is received, before the pipe is stacked for storage. Inspect for rust, mechanical damage, debris and, on premium connections, any mark on the sealing surface. Threads should be re-coated with the correct thread compound and the protectors refitted immediately after inspection. Leaving protectors in place unopened means any transit damage will not be discovered until the string is being run, when it is far more costly to resolve.
