CRA clad and lined pipe is carbon or low-alloy steel pipe with a corrosion-resistant alloy layer on the inside. The steel backing carries the pressure; the CRA layer — a stainless steel, duplex or nickel alloy — carries the corrosive fluid. It is the alternative to making the whole pipe from an expensive alloy, and it is the usual answer for sour or CO2-rich service where carbon steel alone would fail.

Concept image: CRA clad and lined pipe uses a steel backing for pressure and a corrosion-resistant alloy layer for the fluid.

Clad or lined: the difference that decides the inspection

Backing and CRA layer combinations

The backing is usually carbon or low-alloy steel to API 5L or ASTM A106. The CRA layer is chosen against the CO2, H2S and chloride content of the produced or injected fluid, and the common grades are 316L, duplex 2205, Alloy 825, Alloy 625 and 904L. The combination is set by the corrosion study, not by habit — a backing that is strong enough is not a substitute for a CRA layer that is resistant enough.

Standards and what to name on the order

Clad and lined line pipe is supplied to API 5LD where the project calls for it. The bonding of the layer draws on ASTM A263 for stainless-clad plate and ASTM A264 for nickel-alloy-clad plate. State the backing grade and wall, the CRA grade and layer thickness, the outside diameter, and the test requirements.

Inspection and documents

  • Ultrasonic bond testing on clad pipe; dimensional and hydrostatic test on both
  • Mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 on request with third-party witness (SGS, BV or TUV)
  • Marking and sea-worthy export packing

What to state on the enquiry

  • Backing standard and grade, outside diameter, backing wall and CRA layer thickness
  • CRA grade, and whether clad or lined
  • Length, quantity and destination port
  • Test and certificate requirements, and whether a third party must witness

For the service conditions behind the grade choice, see NACE MR0175 in practice. Coatings such as 3PE and FBE are a different product — they are an external barrier, not an internal corrosion-resistant layer — and they are covered on the coated pipe page.
