Why the Coupling Grade Matters
The coupling is often the weakest link in a casing string, so its grade and heat treatment should be specified deliberately rather than defaulted. API 5CT requires that the coupling be of the same grade as the pipe body unless otherwise agreed, and be subjected to the same heat treatment. In practice a higher grade coupling is sometimes specified to increase joint efficiency, or a coupling of the same grade but with controlled hardness is used for sour service. Couplings are seamless because a welded coupling would introduce a seam in the highest stress region of the connection. Each coupling is thread gauged with API 5B plug and ring gauges and marked with its heat number so it can be traced back to the pipe it was made up with.
Thread Forms and Gauging
STC and LTC both use an API round thread but differ in thread length, with LTC being longer and therefore stronger. BTC uses a buttress thread with a 3 degree load flank and a 10 degree stabbing flank, giving a much greater shear area and higher tensile efficiency. All three are inspected with API 5B gauges. Thread compound is applied before make-up, and the correct compound must be selected for the service: standard compounds for normal service, and compounds containing no free metals such as zinc or copper for sour service, since these metals can accelerate sulfide stress cracking. Make-up torque must follow the mill or API recommendation, and torque-turn monitoring is recommended for critical strings.

Casing couplings: thread form first, then grade
A coupling carries the same load as the pipe it joins and is the part of a joint most likely to be replaced. It is bought to the same API 5CT grade as the pipe and to the thread form used on the string, so an enquiry that gives the pipe size without the thread form is usually answered with a question.
| Well condition | What it drives in the string | What to state on the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| STC, LTC or BTC string | The thread form fixes the coupling profile and the length | the thread form, and the pipe weight |
| Grade matching the pipe | The coupling grade is normally the same as the pipe grade | the grade, or the pipe grade it has to match |
| Replacement or spares | Only the thread form and the grade matter | the quantity, and whether thread protectors are required (see thread protector types) |
| Sour service | The restricted hardness requirement applies to the coupling as well | NACE MR0175, and the pipe grade on the string |
| High pressure or gas tight joint | Standard couplings are replaced by a premium connection | whether a premium connection is actually the requirement |
| Storage before use | Thread protection is often ordered with the coupling | whether protectors are in scope |
| Couplings ahead of the pipe | Couplings are machined from tube, so the lead time differs from the pipe | whether the couplings are needed before the pipe |
What is the difference between STC, LTC and BTC couplings?
All three are API 5CT casing connections. STC has the shortest round thread and the lowest joint strength, suited to shallow wells. LTC has a longer round thread giving higher joint efficiency, used for medium depth wells. BTC uses a trapezoidal buttress thread with much greater shear area, giving the highest tensile efficiency and the best resistance to jump-out, and is the standard for deep and high pressure wells. BTC requires more careful make-up because cross-threading is easier with the buttress form.
Are couplings supplied separately from the casing?
Yes. Couplings can be supplied as a complete package already made up on the casing, or separately as loose items for spares and field repair. When ordering separately, state the casing outside diameter, weight per foot or wall thickness, thread form, grade and quantity. Note that couplings are size and weight specific: a coupling for 7 inch 23 lb/ft casing is not interchangeable with one for 7 inch 29 lb/ft casing even though the outside diameter is the same.
Grades supplied and minimum properties
The grade fixes the minimum strength and the chemistry. The table below gives the requirements that separate the API 5CT grades ordered most often; the full composition and mechanical table for each grade is on its own page.
| Grade | Yield strength | Tensile strength |
|---|---|---|
| J55 | 379 – 552 MPa (55,000 – 80,000 psi) | 517 MPa min (75,000 psi) |
| K55 | 379 – 552 MPa (55,000 – 80,000 psi) | 655 MPa min (95,000 psi) |
| N80-1 | 552 – 758 MPa (80,000 – 110,000 psi) | 689 MPa min (100,000 psi) |
| N80Q | 552 – 758 MPa (80,000 – 110,000 psi) | 689 MPa min (100,000 psi) |
| L80 Type 1 | 552 – 655 MPa (80,000 – 95,000 psi) | 655 MPa (95,000 psi) |
| P110 | 758 – 965 MPa (110,000 – 140,000 psi) | 862 MPa (125,000 psi) |
| Q125 | 862 – 1,034 MPa (125,000 – 150,000 psi) | 931 MPa min (135,000 psi) |
The complete chemistry and mechanical table for each grade, with the notes that qualify it, is on the individual grade page – for example API 5CT P110 casing. L80, C90, T95 and C110 also sit in this ladder; they are the grades with a hardness limit for sour service rather than the next step up in strength. R95 is the 95 ksi strength grade, and API 5CT sets no hardness limit for it. A coupling is ordered to the same grade as the pipe it joins, and to the same end and thread form; the grade is not chosen separately.

Casing coupling dimensions: what to confirm on the order
| Thread | Size range | What dimensions matter |
|---|---|---|
| STC | 4 1/2 – 20 inch | Coupling OD, length and weight; pipe OD and weight per foot |
| LTC | 4 1/2 – 20 inch | Coupling OD, length and weight; drift and thread gauge |
| BTC | 4 1/2 – 20 inch | Coupling OD, length, weight and connection make-up requirements |
The coupling dimensions come from the casing size and thread form, not from a free choice. The order should name the casing OD, weight designation, grade, thread and drift so the correct coupling is selected from the API 5CT/5B table.
