Steel Pipe into Indonesia: INSW, SNI and What to Check

Indonesia imports steel pipe through a formal, platform-driven process: the import documentation runs through the Indonesia National Single Window, and standards questions sit with the national standards system. Two things decide an order here, and neither of them is the steel grade.

What Indonesian buyers order from China

• API 5L line pipe – Grade B and X42 to X70 – for gas, water and gathering lines.
• API 5CT casing and tubing – J55, K55, N80, L80 and the hardness controlled grades.
• Seamless pipe to ASTM A106 / A53 for steam and process service.
• Large diameter welded pipe for water transmission and piling.

The two decisions that decide the order

One: the import documentation runs through INSW. Indonesia National Single Window is the platform through which import licensing and customs documentation are handled. It is the importer’s account and the importer’s broker that operate it – a supplier cannot file in the importer’s name, and any supplier who says otherwise is describing something it cannot do. What we control is that the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificates describe the same goods in the same words.

Two: whether an SNI standard applies to the product and its use. Indonesia’s national standards are published as SNI, and mandatory certification applies to specified products rather than to everything. Whether it applies to a given pipe order is decided by the product and its end use, and it is confirmed with the importer’s certification body before the order is placed – not after the pipe has shipped.
