Where the Pumping Tee Fits
The pumping tee sits in the wellhead assembly directly below the stuffing box and above the tubing head or the casing head. Its central bore allows the polished rod to pass through vertically, and its side outlet takes the produced fluid from the tubing to the flowline. In many assemblies there is a second outlet for casing gas, and where that is provided the tee is often called a casing and tubing tee. The tee therefore has three functions at once: it is a pressure containing wellhead component, a load carrying element that supports the stuffing box and the polished rod clamp, and a flow path for production. Because it is a pressure containing part of the wellhead, its rating must be at least equal to the wellhead equipment rating so that the tee is not the weak point in the assembly.
Selection Considerations
When selecting a pumping tee, the first consideration is the connection: the lower end must match the tubing head or casing head connection, and the upper end must match the stuffing box, which is usually a tubing thread or a flange. The outlet connections must match the flowline and the casing gas line. The second consideration is the pressure rating, which should match the wellhead equipment. The third is the material: where the well produces H2S, both the tee body and the seals must meet NACE MR0175. Where the well produces sand or has a high flow rate, consider the erosion resistance of the outlet, since the tee outlet is a common erosion location. Some designs also incorporate a wireline or a gauge port, and a test port for pressure testing the assembly.
What is the difference between a pumping tee and a casing head?
A pumping tee is a wellhead component that sits above the tubing head and provides the production outlet while allowing the polished rod to pass through, and it carries the stuffing box. A casing head is the lowest wellhead component, and it supports the casing string and provides the connection for the casing and for the casing gas outlet. They are different components at different positions in the wellhead stack, and their connections and pressure ratings are matched to the equipment above and below them.
Can the pumping tee be supplied for sour service?
Yes. For sour service the tee is supplied in a material that meets NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, normally A105 with a hardness limit of 22 HRC maximum, or A350 LF2 for low temperature service, and the seals are selected as sour compatible. Confirm on the certificate that NACE compliance is stated, since the tee is a pressure containing wellhead component and a mismatch here is a safety issue.
