API 5L Line Pipe for Argentina: Grades, PSL and Delivery

Line pipe bundles stacked on a port quay

Most pages that rank for Argentine line pipe enquiries reuse a generic product page, which leaves the grade, PSL and process decision to the buyer. This page covers the API 5L grades Argentine gas and water projects order, the process choice that follows diameter and wall, and the document checks that decide whether the cargo clears at the Argentine end.

What Argentine projects order

  • Line pipe to API 5L – Grade B and X42 to X70 cover most water and gathering work; large-diameter gas transmission moves into X70 and X80.
  • PSL2 for gas transmission – the projects that need a carbon equivalent cap, impact testing and non-destructive examination of the weld or body land here.
  • Seamless to ASTM A106 / A53 – for steam, process and general mechanical service.
  • Large-diameter welded pipe – LSAW or SSAW for transmission mains, water lines and piling, where diameter decides the process.

The list mirrors what Argentine buyers already order from China. What changes between enquiries is not the pipe family but the grade, the product specification level and the manufacturing route.

Grade, wall and process move together

The grade fixes the guaranteed strength; the wall and the outside diameter decide how the pipe is made. A higher grade allows a thinner wall at the same design pressure, but it also tightens field welding control, which is why gas projects specify a grade and a PSL rather than a “stronger is better” answer.

RouteTypical outside diameterWhere it fitsWhat to watch
SeamlessUp to about 24 in (610 mm)Smaller high-pressure lines, heavy wall, bent or threaded sectionsCost per tonne rises faster than welded as wall increases
ERWUp to about 24 in (610 mm)Water, gathering and lower-pressure linesThe weld seam limits where high-pressure and sour service specifications will accept it
LSAWAbout 16 in (406 mm) and aboveHigh-pressure gas transmission and larger diametersLonger mill lead time on high-grade, heavy-wall plate
SSAWLarge diameter, one line covers a wide rangeWater mains, piling and low-pressure large-diameter workHigh-pressure gas usually specifies LSAW or seamless unless the project permits spiral pipe

The grade is the same across the routes; the difference is the seam and its inspection. API 5L PSL2 adds the carbon equivalent, impact testing and non-destructive examination scope that gas transmission normally requires.

What the Argentine end changes

Import clearance runs in the importer’s name through its customs broker, with ARCA as the administering body. The supplier’s part is the document set that has to match the pipe: invoice, packing list, bill of lading, mill test certificates traceable to the heat numbers, and a certificate of origin where the importer is claiming a preference. The full trade-term and document checklist is on the Argentina guide, so this page keeps only the product side of the decision.

For a gas line the two fields that usually stall an order are the CVN test temperature and the coating system. PSL2 makes impact testing mandatory but does not set the temperature; that value comes from the design code or line specification. Coating is decided by whether the line is buried and what the site specifies, so state FBE, 3PE/3LPE, 3PP, cement mortar lining or bare on the enquiry.

Delivery into Argentine ports

Buenos Aires and Bahia Blanca are the usual discharge ports, with Atlantic ports relevant to the southern gas and water projects. Bundles that fit a 40 ft container travel as container cargo; 12 m lengths and large diameters normally ship as breakbulk, where FOB, CFR and CIF apply as written. The destination port and trade term decide the shipping form, so send both with the enquiry.

Mistakes that cost an Argentine order

  • Leaving the CVN temperature off a PSL2 order. The mill cannot run the impact test until the design temperature is named, so the order stalls at the specification stage.
  • Specifying X80 without naming the delivery condition. X80 is a PSL2-only grade supplied as quenched and tempered or thermomechanically rolled; the project has to say which it accepts.
  • Choosing a process before the diameter and wall are fixed. The process follows diameter and wall, so a small high-pressure line is seamless while a large transmission main is LSAW or SSAW.
  • Describing the coating loosely. The invoice and the certificates have to name the same coating system, or the clearance file does not agree with itself.

What to send with the enquiry

  • API 5L grade and PSL, with the edition the project works to.
  • Outside diameter, wall thickness, length and end preparation; state minimum wall or nominal wall.
  • Manufacturing route, or the design pressure and the allowable stress if the route is still open.
  • Coating or lining, and the design temperature for any impact testing.
  • Destination port and trade term, and whether the cargo ships in containers or as breakbulk.
  • Inspection scope: EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, third-party inspection, and the non-destructive examination required.
  • Quantity in tonnes and in lengths, and the delivery window.

Frequently asked questions

Which API 5L grade is normally ordered for Argentine gas lines?

Water and gathering lines run Grade B and X42 to X60; large-diameter, high-pressure gas transmission moves into X70 and X80. The grade follows what is sizing the wall, and the comparison is set out on the X65, X70 and X80 page.

Do we need PSL2 for an Argentine order?

Use PSL2 where the project needs a carbon equivalent cap, impact testing and a defined non-destructive examination scope – which is normal for gas transmission. PSL1 remains the lower-cost route for water and utility lines. Never downgrade a job that the specification requires to be PSL2.

Can you clear Argentine customs for us?

No. The declaration is filed in the importer’s name, through its customs broker, against the classification the importer declares. What we provide is a document set that describes the pipe accurately and consistently, so the entry is built on facts rather than on an interpretation.
